Blank DVD-R/+RDVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc and DVD-R is a recordable version of the DVD optical disc. DVD-R was developed by Pioneer in the late 90's. At that time there were 2 competing formats, DVD-R and DVD+R. Each format was supported by different companies. There are still 2 different formats today, but the vast majority of DVD recorders are called hybrid drives. This means they can accept, record and play either format. It is more common to find consumer DVD recorders which are meant for the home entertainment setup will still support one of the formats, DVD-R or DVD+R. Consumer DVD recorders are sometimes called standalone recorders because they are not installed in a computer. Consumer DVD recorders are a popular trend to replace the VHS VCR since they serve basically the same function in a home entertainment setup.
